Melanotan 2 dose, is a synthetic analog of naturally occurring hormone A-MSH (alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone) which is present in individuals exposed to damaging levels of UV radiation, causing a process commonly known as tanning. A-MSH is also present in greater amounts in individuals with darker skin tones. Melanotan 2 dose itself was developed at the University of Arizona.
Researchers felt that the best defense against skin cancer was melanin otherwise known as a tan. The theory behind this was to induce the body's natural pigmentary system and produce melanin or a protective tan on people's skin before UV exposure. Research of administering this synthetic peptide into the body could cause sunless tanning. This whole idea of sunless tanning was brought about to help with the fight against melanoma a type of skin cancer. It has been reported that doctors worldwide have diagnosed around 160,000 new cases of melanoma annually which is 75% of skin cancer related deaths.
